The team used CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing to knock out a pigmentation gene in squid embryos, which eliminated pigmentation in the eye and in skin cells (chromatophores) with high efficiency.

海面の再構成は、過去の氷床の変動と過去と将来の温暖化への対応を理解する上で重要である。 ここでは、スペインのマヨルカ島にある洞窟から採取した水生生物の生長を利用した 新第三紀と第四紀の海面スナップショットを紹介する。 水生生物の過成長(POS)は、海面との明確な関係と正確なU-Pb年代のため、優れた海面指標点である。 その結果、メシニアン塩分危機の発生前と発生時の海面は、 それぞれ33.3±0.25m(6.54±0.37Ma)と31.8±0.25m(5.86±0.60Ma)であったことがわかった。 さらに、他の3つのPOSについて、 氷河の等張調整と長期隆起を補正した全球平均海面高度（GMSL）の推定値を示した。 その結果、鮮新世-更新世移行期のGMSLは2.63±0.11 Maの時点で6.4 m (-2.0-8.8 m)であり、 更新世中期移行期の初期と後期ではそれぞれ-1.1 m (-5.6-2.4 m)と5 m (-1.5-8.1 m)であった。 これらの推定値は、過去の海面の進化に重要な制約を与えるものであり、 MSC以前の局所的な海面は鮮新世の最高地点と類似しており、 その後は著しく低くなっていることを示している。
